Standing between Horndean and Waterlooville, Merchistoun Hall has spent years at the centre of local legend. This Grade II listed hall began life in the early 19th century as a gentleman's residence known as The Grove, before being bought in 1836 by Admiral Sir Charles Napier — a celebrated but famously eccentric naval commander, known locally for wandering Horndean with a pet monkey on his shoulder. Napier renamed the house after his family seat in Scotland, and it's his presence that many believe still lingers within its walls. During the Second World War the Hall served as headquarters for 30 Corps of the Royal Artillery, before later life as a furniture store and, since 1956, home to the Horndean Community Association.

It's this layered history — naval hero, wartime headquarters, decades of quiet community use — that feeds the stories now told about the Hall. A grey lady who wanders the halls. The admiral himself, said to return long after his passing. A drowning at the lake that still echoes through the grounds. The Hall has since become a magnet for ghost-hunting groups drawn by its reputation.

This is a small-group investigation, limited by design. You won't be watching from the sidelines — you'll be taking part in an ongoing research project into the Hall's paranormal history, working alongside the team to gather evidence and test the legends for yourself.

Whether you're a seasoned investigator or simply drawn in by the history, this is your chance to step inside Merchistoun Hall after dark and find out what's really behind the myths.
